5 Simple Mistakes to advoid:

Becoming a successful Bum Marketer is something that can be done if done right. But if done wrong, Bum Marketing can be a huge waste of time, energy, and money. There are a few things that a Bum marketer needs to avoid  

First mistake… a boring title. Realize that the title of the article is going to be mixed in with quite a few others that your potential reader has to choose from. There are many of you competing for the same set of eyes. Don’t let your title be something that will blend in with all the rest. Make it something that will stand out and get noticed. Make sure that you don’t get too crazy and make sure that it is relevant to the topic you want to address, but, still be creative and you will stay competitive with other bum marketers.

Second mistake…not having a clear purpose. What is the main reason you want the reader to read your article? Is there a goal that you have in mind? Be clear as to what you want them to do and give them plenty of reason to want to take the action you want them to take. Have a starting point and and ending point in planning your article and use everything in between to help them get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’. This is something that Bum marketers fail to do all too often.

Third mistake…Not knowing your target audience. Bum marketers need to keep in mind who the target audience is and write to their level. If you are writing to a group of people who are typically very knowledgeable about the subject matter, then you better make sure that you are as well. Gather as much information about the subject as you can and make yourself knowledgeable. Make sure that your research is good and up to date.Find out what they ask when they go online to search for this information and find how to relate to them. Study your target market and write to them.

Fourth mistake…writing articles that won’t get published. Look at the standards that article directories have and write your articles to fit the most strict of standards. Make sure that you have the minimum number of preferred words. Make sure that it is well written. Make sure that it doesn’t have any problems with links within your article and that you link to appropriate places. Bum marketers will often forget to check the article they are trying to submit and see if it is in compliance only to have it rejected and end up rewriting it to standards.

Fifth mistake…no call to action. As a Bum marketer you have to remember that your goal is not to give away the milk when you want to sell them the cow~ invite the reader to go to your website or to take what ever action you want them to take.  Readers love to gain further information and you will be providing a valuable service with your article.

Final thoughts and wrapup:  A successful Bum marketing campaign revolves around choosing the right keywords, having a clear purpose in mind when you start writing, and making sure you answer the right questions. It will also let the reader know that you are an authority on the subject matter and have done your homework. I will give them a reason and opportunity to take the action you wish them to take.

Bum Marketing is a great way for the average Joe or Jane to make an extra income online.  This concept has been around for decades, and it will not disappear any time soon. The reason for its popularity is simple… It Works!

Optimize Your Blog For Traffic

I started a Niche website last winter, almost to date of this post. I wanted it to be as content rich as possible so I used some PLR content I had, at first, then graduated it to original content. The idea was to get it up quickly and get it into the search engines before the local tourist season hit in Cody, Wyoming.

Around May, the blog was slow to attract visitors and traffic at first, which was ok, I was still in the ‘creation’ process. I have and probably always will be a strong supporter of the ’natural search’ process. But this time, when it was time to expose my area niche blog to the world I experimented with different ideas and came up with several things that worked well. 

 The whole month of May 09 I received a whopping 256 visitors TOTAL to my blog. I was still in the design and content stage so that was no big deal. I never expect overnight success when creating a new blog. Towards the end of May (May 30th) I begun to optimize my blog. You can see the results that took place almost immediately.

What is it about some websites that makes them popular destinations for a huge number of visitors? Why are some blogs checked out by tens of thousands of people every day while others struggle to find a single visitor?

The biggest challenge for blogger’s today is to be able to increase search engine and page ranking of their blogs. If you want to survive in this new blog age, you have to ensure that you come up with content that is of high-quality, one that will capture people and keep them coming back. And with millions of bits of information bombarding the Internet every second, it’s crucial that your blog tops the chart in search engine rankings.

How to Increase Visitors and Improve Search Engine (SE)  Rankings

There are several different ways that you can employ to increase traffic to your blog and to improve your blog’s credibility.  Here I will go over a few, briefly.  This post is basically for you blog owners who have a blog but have no clue how to get traffic to it.

•  First rule of thumb: Relevant Content Creates a Readership. Before you even think of optimizing your blog you need to know that the subject matter of your content will be critical to your blog’s traffic potential.

Visitors will come back to your site if they know you provide relevant top notch information or if the information touches them in some direct way. Blogs that tackle a specific and limited range of topics generally tend to do better then those with a more scattered approach. Blogging within a particular niche is usually the best way to experience success.

Good Content Creates a Readership. You have to regularly post new content, which should be interesting, entertaining, relevant, and informative. Content is the meat and potatoes that your readers come back for. Also, along the lines of content, the quality of your writing, the uniqueness of your perspective, the frequency with which you post new articles to your blog and the way the content is presented will also make a difference. Think of it like this, I have a big dog. My big dog likes to eat. Alot. He shows up where the food is, this is his idea of a good time.  Your readership is very much based on this principle. They want to be where the food is.

• Keywords- Search Engines use keywords. The idea of using keywords is to bring traffic to your blog by way of search engines. Keywords are the words that people  input into a search engine, such a Google, MSN or Yahoo, when searching for specific information.  Using specific keywords relevant to your particular niche in your  post title and scatted throughout your blog posts will help you perform better in search results.

Targeting traffic that isn’t really interested in your website almost serves no purpose. The more relevant your content is, the more chances you have of being able to direct a target market to your website. You don’t want to bombard your content with nothing but keywords, or worse yet, unrelated keywords. This will cause you to be penalized and banned by search engines.

• Search Engines – Search Engines are the vehicles that drive traffic and  potential customers to your blog. At least 85% of people looking for goods, information and services on the Internet find websites through Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN.  So naturally you want the search engines to know that your blog exists. Direct submission seems like the most obvious solution, but it may take months to get a search engine to crawl your site.

A quicker and more web friendly way of  getting into the search engines is by ‘Link Popularity” All it requires for a search engine to find you is a link to your blog from another site. Eventually, the search engines will spider that link and discover your blog. A link from a frequently indexed site could lead to your blog’s discovery within as little as a day.

There are several different ways to build links back to your site.

• Comments. Find similar blogs, and post a sincere comment with a link back to your site
• Post comments to the blogs of your potential customers.
• Participate in relevant forums. Forums are a great way to communicate with like minded folks. Leave interesting comments to engage readers with a link back to your site.
• Become an active user of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, MySpace or Friendfeed.
• Ask. Write a nice email to the owner of a related blog asking for a link exchange.
• Articles. By writing several relevant articles and posting them to article directories will provide readers another way of finding your blog.

 
• Pinging - Pinging your blog frequently is another good way to get your blog seen. Every time that you update it, ping it. Pinging your blog is nothing more than a quick transmission to the blog directories notifying them that there is new content available. Pinging will improve your visibility and increase your traffic. Pinging also alerts spiders from various search engines to check out your site for updates and indexing.

• Plugins- Plugins will also help you create a search engine friendly blog. There are a number of fantastic Wordpress plug-ins out there that can give your blog the extra edge that it needs to be one of the best. 

The best and by far the most popular Word Press plugin is All in One SEO Pack. With this plugin you can optimize your titles, Meta Tag Descriptions, and Keywords for your overall site as well as your individual pages.

Google XML Sitemaps - This plugin will generate a special XML site map which can help you to get indexed by the major search engines  like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com to better index your blog.

StatPress  - This plugin gives you up to date reports that help you track your blogs progress.  You are able to see which are the most popular post, pages and categories. Real handy tool to keep up on your readers interests.

There are several more good plugins available that can help your blog reach ultimate heights in the search engines and I will add more over time.

Well, this post ended up a little longer than I estimated. I did forget to mention RSS feeds. I may add a post on those later. One last ‘create blogs that attract visitors” idea… Personalize your blog.  You can post your pictures and write about your field of expertise, which should be related to your products. You can also use your blog as an avenue to educate others in your field of expertise by informing your existing or prospective customers on any new product features or developments in your business—if you open new outlets or if you have new promos, for instance. These continued updates will enhance your reputation as a reliable supplier or a stable business partner.

The problem is that many readers are instantly skeptical of what they view as paid recommendations. Whenever they mouse over a link’s anchor text and see an affiliate code, they back away and don’t make a sale.

This is where link cloaking can help with a direct sale. Rather than having readers shy away from a great product, link cloaking can help marketers direct a reader to the product. When they see an inbound link with a domain that they trust, they’re sold. All that’s standing between them and the sale is the quality of the product itself.

Secondly, link cloaking is essential for certain marketing channels. While Google Adwords has often been a favorite for affiliates, they’ve recently changed their policies and appear to be taking a harder stance on affiliate products, particularly those with unclear conditions and slightly misleading terms.

While this isn’t a problem for most affiliates — the majority of whom promote products that fall well inside the terms and conditions — some affiliates are having trouble getting their PPC ads to show, after being struck with a poor quality score.

This is where link cloaking can again save the day. Rather than having a direct link leading to an affiliate page, direct-to-offer PPC advertisers can cloak their links and have them redirect through their own server. This isn’t just perfect for avoiding the infamous Google slap, but also for adding tracking data and inter-offer landing pages.

There’s a third, top secret, advantage to using link cloaking. While most affiliate websites offer long-term cookies, few will cover multiple products. With the right strategy, you could incorporate multiple affiliate links into a single cloaking redirect, leaving you with the potential to earn twice as many commissions per clicker. Alongside the other great benefits of link cloaking, this really sweetens the deal, and makes link cloaking an absolutely essential practice for serious affiliates, full-time internet marketers, and dedicated online entrepreneurs.

With more than $40 million a day in business transacted on eBay,  selling eBay items successfully is an art AND a science. Finding the right item to sell is the key. The good news is that eBay offers so many different forms of  products. You just need to do a little research to help you determine  if you are selling the right item.

To be a success with your Instant Auction Sites you must do your planning and market research, offer something unique, and pin point your target market.

How to Find Your Niche Market on Ebay

Many of us dream of working from home by selling products through eBay. But what would we sell? And how would we know if a market exists for the items we have? To avoid building niche sites that nobody wants, some research is in order. The goal of this research is to find your eBay niche.

I will show you how I do research and create my list for a new eBay niche site.  First I go to eBayand select a category. As you can see from the eBay home page I have alot of general categories to choose from.

For this demonstration I decided to go with Pet Supplies.  Since Pet Supplies is a huge niche and covers everything from birds to reptiles I will go with Americas very popular pet, dogs. 

For many just starting out with niche building the key is to find a product that you’re already familiar with. Perhaps you’ve been a collector of antiques for many years. If so, you probably know when you come across a targeted keyword / item that could potentially sell to a large group of collectors.

Likewise, you have a good idea of which items you should avoid – items that are likely to collect cyber dust and not sell very well. You can put this knowledge to work for you on your eBay niche site. Your expertise with antiques gives you an edge over many competitors. Which keywords would you do a search for online?

Once I have a good idea of the niche I want to target, it’s time for the second half of my preliminary work. I open up my notepad (word is ok but to enter them later in the Instant Auction Site software notepad works better) and copy & paste the search results from eBay. These are my main keywords.  But, I will have to tweak them to get the results I want.

Tweaking Your Keyword List:

Once I have my Keyword list on notepad it’s time to tweak. First I need to remove anything I don’t want on my site. I am going to remove Tents and Canopies, Ramps and Stairs, and Signs & Plaques. Those are not dog supply items I want to target.

Next I have to make the rest of my list keyword related. Dogs is just too broad so I am going to drill deeper into the dog supply niche so as a large dog owner,  I am going to target ‘large’ dogs. I could drill deeper and select ‘extra large dog’  but my keyword list is based on seller keywords in eBays marketplace and after a eBay search ‘extra large dog’ didn’t provide a large enough selection. The ‘large dog’ search produced enough products for my niche site.  

So now I want to add Large &  Dog in front of most of my niche specific keywords and separate any keywords grouped together with {&} like Pooper Scoops & Bags.  Since most of the keywords are general and can be used for any size dog {flea and tick} I just added the word Dog or Pet in front of those.

Now my tweaked keyword list looks like this:

Next is domain name research. For this post I did my search on Bing. 

I came up with several options. Large Dog is a definite keeper since this is my main niche theme and has produced a large variety of results – all products that I will have on my Instant Auction Site. Everything I see on my Bing search has to do with supplies. So my domain search will include the keywords large, dog and supplies. Pretty simple so far right?

Next I go to GoDaddy to do the domain search. I lucked out with a dot net site “ largedogsupplies.net “. Usually it’s not this easy and I have to get a little creative.

Now I open my Instant Auction Site software and enter my information. For this step I will have my eBay campaign ID, Domain information, keyword list, and AdSense Pub ID ready. If you want to add additional ClickBank or affiliate products you will need to have this information ready as well. (item, pictures, and affiliate link)

 And the Result? Large Dog Supplies dot net 

Not to bad for a few hours work eh?

Traffic and Sales

For many affiliate sellers, waiting is the hard part. But you’ll need patience for this phase of your niche-finding project. Monitor your traffic, keywords  and sales and see how they perform. If they do well, you can build up your stock even more and increase your niche sites. If they don’t quite live up to your expectations, you can research your keywords again to target the most profitable ones or you can go back to square one. Pick another niche from eBay and start researching it.

Internet relationships are very different from actual personal relationships and a bit more difficult to cultivate. They are based primarily on like, know, and trust. Many people are now reaching out to others through social network websites like Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and others.

If you are new to Twitter you may not realize that you can create your personal or business brand and virtually dominate your market, simply by building a list of followers.

Curiosity, you can’t fight it, so you may as well take advantage of it. People are curious by nature! They like to see who is following who, so often they will click on the links and check out the followers of people they know and follow them as well and by following the leaders, so to speak you may naturally end up will new followers as well. Just try and keep your target market in mind when you choose ‘gurus’ to follow.

When broadcasting the message, you should definitely give credit to the original poster.  I know at first it may sound like this will only be good for the original tweeter, but retweeting can actually benefit you just as much if not more because;

3. It will help you build relationships with the original posters.

Retweeting someone else’s content is an act of kindness, and for the most part bloggers like to return the favor. You shouldn’t expect someone to retweet your content just because you retweet theirs. Just keep in mind that your chance of being on the other end of a retweet increases as you retweet.

Retweeting is all about providing value to your followers so if you want others to retweet your post then you want to make sure that you are providing them with quality content worth tweeting about.

The bottom line is retweeting is a great way to add quality and value to your Twitter page. If done right, retweeting can help you educate your followers, build your personal brand, increase future traffic, and connect you to other great people in your niche.

The same applies to the Internet marketing industry even though there are unsavory people out there who’d have you believe it’s a “Walk in the Park” and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it.

And I’ll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the working world punching a clock being a subordinate to someone who does not have your interests in mind, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken or egg question, “what comes first the chicken or the egg”? Personally I vote for, well never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion – I have no clue and I don’t think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make money online you must first have Passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make money.

Passion in this sense simply means that you’ve researched and like the company and products or services. It is then that you translate that like (or Passion) into the education, excitement and work that usually accompany Passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion because they can sell anything. But I’m concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I’m not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join – but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won’t attempt to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won’t stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, and easy to understand with great products and services that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don’t find it move on, you can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Comments like, well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is
excellent so I guess I’ll start that business – does not sound like a decision based on anything near Passion. And remember when you hear that an Internet “guru” does that, don’t be tempted, because as I said earlier they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it’s your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed. Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet Marketing but if you don’t first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being Passionate about a company and products and services that has market proof that it will sell is a pitfall you simply must avoid.

How should I use the keywords once I have found them?

There are a few ways of making sure your content does its job when it comes to keywords. One is to carefully monitor your use and to write posts around popular keywords related to your topic. Another is simply to focus on turning out good, relevant content and assuming the volume of your output and its overall quality will produce desired keyword results. Generally speaking, the best strategy for most bloggers probably lies somewhere in the middle of those extremes. By producing content with an understanding of keywords while not compromising its integrity in an effort to stuff every post with popular search terms, one can usually be relatively successful.

One should strive to make use of their primary keywords in the titles of their blog’s posts. They should also attempt to use those words and phrases, along with keywords of secondary importance within the posts themselves. 
One should beware of overusing keywords. Search engines grow smarter all the time, and the days when one could get real results by stuffing keywords onto a page without rhyme or reason are gone. At some point you should have a list of ideas to research. Now you need to look deeper – into sub niches. Research is the easy part. OK maybe not. But for many the hunt is the best part. Some of us are born researchers. We like to hunt out the facts, the meat and potatoes of a niche market. Who’s searching for this? Who’s buying? At what price?

eBay Pulse is a great place to start looking at sub-niches. Select the category first (using the topics you gathered from your niche research list), then look for profitable subniches by selecting a sub-category.

Now that you have some potential sub-niches to work with, you will want to see how much of a market there is. Just because a sub-niche is popular doesn’t mean people spend money on it.

Amazon is a great place to see what currently exists for any given sub-niche. Chances are, the more books there are written on that subject, the more that market spends on those topics.
